Students develop the research and communication skills that today’s employers demand.
In the 21 st century, science writing means so much more than publishing in a technical journal or presenting at an academic conference. Designed to supplement students’ course- and research-based training in technical science writing, the Client Consults project aims to teach students research and communication skills tailored to science and technology policy, advocacy, and practitioner audiences.
How it works
Clients propose a question that will guide the future of their work, and student teams spend the semester conducting open-source research (e.g., academic publications, think-tank reports, policy documents, local newspaper articles) in pursuit of an answer.
Through collaboration with one another and the Parlee Center director, student teams ultimately generate a briefing memo with discrete recommendations to guide the Client’s work moving forward. They then brief the Client, in person or virtually, on their findings. Participating students grow their written portfolios while building their professional networks.
Current Consults
In the fall of 2026, the Parlee Center is collaborating with Global Nature Watch to explore the utility of artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools in tracking and reporting on deforestation and other nature events. The Client Consult team will examine how AI is currently being used by different sectors to monitor nature outcomes and whether/how mistrust is hindering the effectiveness of these deforestation-monitoring tools.
