The Earth & Environmental Science (EES) interdisciplinary minor focuses on developing knowledge and skills important for understanding Earth, including the natural and anthropogenic processes that occur at or near Earth’s surface. It allows students to engage in the study of Earth and environmental systems from a number of fields, including geological, environmental, biological, marine, and chemical perspectives, and considers Earth as a resource worthy of protection as well as one with hazards. A minor in EES consists of 28 credits.
Required courses include:
- Foundation (all required): ENVS-100 and BIO-101Q
- Introductory Geoscience (select 1): ENVS/GEOS-102Q or ENVS-142Q
- Intermediate Geoscience (select 2): ENVS-180Q, 266Q, or ENVS/GEOS-240Q
- Environmental & Advanced Geoscience (select 2): ENVS/BIO-334, 415W, CHEM-315, ENVS-361, 370, or 372
Other recommended courses include: CHEM-107/LQ and 108/LQ; STAT 141Q or MTH 111; ENVS-242, 244, 332, 340, and 452W or 454W, in addition to those courses not already selected from within the minor categories.
Students who plan to continue on within the field of EES after graduation are advised to talk with the EES coordinator to determine the specific courses, and/or additional ones, that may be recommended for continuing on in a particular aspect of this field. EES minors are also recommended to seek out and complete an XLP that provides additional experience and exposure to some aspect of earth and/or environmental science.
For majors in the field of Environment and Sustainability (ENVS) majors who wishing to minor in EES, no more than 12 credits can be counted toward both their EES minor and their major.
Special topics and other new courses may count towards the EES minor with permission of the EES coordinator. Similarly, internships or courses taken during a study abroad or off campus program may also count towards the EES minor with approval from the EES coordinator.
