Through coursework in economics, accounting, and finance, students learn how financial systems work and how institutions allocate capital.

The Finance major consists of 48 credits and prepares students to contribute to society at financial institutions and within the finance and accounting functions of both for-profit and non-profit organizations. 

Students begin their studies with foundational courses in principles of microeconomics (ECON 101) and macroeconomics (ECON-102), building their quantitative skills through Analytic Foundations (ECON-151) or Calculus Stretch I (MATH-105). Classes taken early on in accounting and finance (ACCT‑140 and FIN‑270) build essential skills in interpreting financial statements, understanding markets, and analyzing the value and risk of financial securities.

Students deepen their expertise through intermediate-level courses in economics (ECON-201 or 201), Econometrics (ECON-300Q), and upper‑level electives, such as Corporate Valuation and Financial Modeling (FIN‑362), Corporate Finance (FIN‑370), Investments (FIN‑372), Money and Financial Institutions (FIN‑374), and Financial Statement Analysis (FIN‑375). Students may also choose from topics courses (FIN‑213 or FIN‑313), or accounting electives (ACCT‑240, 241, or 242) to further strengthen their analytical foundation. The major culminates in the Finance Capstone Seminar (FIN‑403W), where students bring together what they have learned to conduct research, refine their analytical skills, and reflect on the ethical and social dimensions of finance.

Those interested in hands‑on experience may participate in the Student‑Managed Investment Fund (UCIMCO) where they help manage an actual investment portfolio. Students considering graduate study receive tailored guidance, and are encouraged to pursue advanced mathematics, statistics, and data analytics to prepare for doctoral‑level work.

For those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in Finance, it is recommended that students take courses in advanced mathematics (MATH‑111, 112, 211, 234, and 311W), computer science (CS‑173), probability, statistics, and data analytics. Students considering this path are encouraged to work closely with their academic advisers to plan an appropriate course sequence and explore research opportunities.
